Windows 10 w/ Kodi & Next PVR

Table of Contents:

Installing Next PVR

Configuring Kodi w /Next PVR

Since the abandonment of WMC, the only real front-runner to the PVR black hole is a program called NextPVR.

Its not without its difficulties, and still takes about 1-2 hours total setup time.  And it might even make you cuss a time or two, but trust me, the other options are likely far worse (we’ve tried most of them).

Next PVR does a formidable job trying to pick up where WMC left off.  And while we still believe WMC is the best, it unfortunately is not going to be the future of PVR and Live TV.  So Next PVR is the next best option.

Installing Next PVR

You will need to install Next PVR software on your HTPC or your Server.

Install the latest version of Next PVR here:

13

Once installation is complete.  Go to the Start Menu and run the Next PVR Program.

It should launch directly into Settings but if it does not click the top left (or right click and go to settings).

Now is where the fun begins:

On the sidebar you will see lots of menu’s.

17

You may see a warning here about DirectX runtime not being installed or available on this machine. If you have Windows 10 I’d recommend completing this guide first to see if if your system actually needs it because most can function completely fine with this error still occurring.

If you have Windows 7 or below, you download it below or here:

Manual installation the latest version of DirectX

Manual download and apply the following update package that updates DirectX to the latest version.

GENERAL Tab: Nothing needs to be changed.

18

Lets go to the DEVICES tab to setup your Tuners (assuming you’ve already followed our TUNERS guide and have them ready to go.)

Here you will see a list of tuners. Note that we have dual tuners installed but it shows 5 items here.  That’s because the tuners are Hybrid tuners and search for ATSC and QAM signals.

You can largely ignore the IPTV device feature for this.

21

Click on the first Item and then Device Setup.  It will show no channels at first.  We need to click SCAN

22

Be prepared to wait anywhere from 10-30 minutes while it scans all the possible channels it gets a signal for.

25

It’ll tell you in the upper left Scan Complete.

27

Now when we go back out we can see our channels listed in our device. Click OK.

28

As you can see it found 31 channels for the ATSC.

Lets do the same for a QAM Device.

29
46

(note the top right this time says type: QAM)

Again, plan to wait another 10-30 minutes.

Once is complete you can see it only found about 6 QAM channels.  That’s normal.

Now, you can either do the same thing for the rest, or you can EXPORT channels from your first two scans your ran and them IMPORT them into the other channels to save time.

Right click on the first Tuner(s) your scanned and click EXPORT channels.

21
38

Now click on a one of the Tuners you haven’t ran yet and Click IMPORT:

Make sure you select the right file for the corresponding Tuner! (ATSC vs. QAM)

40
41

As you can see the finished result is pretty similar Scan results!

42

Now when we click on the CHANNELS tab, we should see a list of Channels.  If you do not, click Update EPG and then be prepared to wait about 30 minutes while it does another Scan.

44
45

The RECORDINGS tab we want to make sure we change our Recordings directory out of our C drive.  Live TV recordings are quite large and can cause a C drive to fill up very quickly.  We’d recommend pointing it in at least a drive with an extra 500GB of free space.

47

The MEDIA FOLDERS Tab, we can largely leave ignore since KODI is going to handle our Media for us.

The DECODERS Tab is very important.  You will need some Audio/Video decoders here to make sure our computers able to process the signal it has coming in.  Some Operating Systems need some help.

You want to make sure you have an MPEG decoder listed on the drop downbox.  If there isn’t one, you will need additional decoders to be able to watch TV.

I would recommend Downloading the Media Player Codec Pack here (website is found here) which has everything you need.

You will also need it to select an AUDIO Rendered.

the Media Player Codec pack may download a couple different options and you may have performance difference depending on them.  If you aren’t sure, go with LAV filters or FFMPEG decoder.

50

The ARTWORK, MISC, MISC 2, DVD,STATUS, and PLUGINS Tabs you can leave alone.

The CLIENTS Tab you should look at. Here should see a list of clients (they might not be showing up yet if you haven’t set them up).

Please make note of the Username and Password, and the bottom XBMC Client PIN settings.

DON’T TOUCH THESE!!  If you leave them, Kodi will have these settings set automatically for you!

52
That’s it, now your ready to configure your Kodi either on this HTPC or your client.

Click CONFIGURE

Here under Hostname, if you installed NextPVR client on the same device you are using to watch Kodi you will not need to change anything. Just press OK.

If you installed it on another device, you will need your devices IPv4 IP Address.  There are many ways to to get this.  But I’ve found the best way is to look on your router for your routers ip address.  You should be able to type that IP Address into your search bar to get to your routers setting page.  Most of the time this page will have a list of “connected devices” (you may have to refresh if you recently connected this).

I named my server “Server” when I set it up so on my connected device it literally lists it as “server” with IP xxx.xxx.x.xxx

Write down the IP that this device is under and enter it below.

Click the ADVANCED and ENABLE “USE TIMESHIFT with LIVE TV”

screenshot00d1

Click OK!

Go back to your settings main menu and click LIVE TV.

screenshot002

If LIVE TV is already enabled.  Disable it and re-enable it again.  This will cause it to “refresh itself”.  If not you will constantly be getting a disconnect error.

screenshot005

Later you can come back to this section and click on Channel manager and re-name, disable, re-number your channels if you want.

screenshot004

What you want to happen is at the top of the screen a dialogue box like below pop up that says “importing EPG from clients.”  This lets you know you’re in business.

n8

Go back to your main screen, click on the Live TV menu option (hopefully you’ve enabled it in skin settings) and enjoy!
