Adding an Internal TV Tuner Device

In this guide I will show you how to add a TV tuner device to your HTPC to easily watch live TV and use your HTPC as a DVR (digital video recorder).

First you obviously will need a TV tuner device such an Avermedia or Hauppauge Tuner card that will install via USB or PCI-E card. Install any drivers that came with your device to enable it in Windows.

Most Internal TV Tuners can only be used by the HTPC’s they are installed in as opposed to Network tuners than can be used on any HTPC on the network.

Other software (in this instance WINTV, or other viewing software) is not needed from the disc as we are going to use WMC as our software to view Live TV.

After the drivers have installed open WMC and move to “Tasks”

Click on “Tasks” and then “TV”

Let’s set up our signal

Setup your region

Enter your zip code

Agree to the terms

Install PlayReady

Examine your channels

If you couldn’t get windows to find your channels change the antenna input on your card and try again (this is what I had to do)

Tell WMC what type of signal you have

Finish your setup

WMC will now download the guide

Go to WMC –> TV –> Guide

Here is what the guide looks like the first time you access it. There are also options where you can manually add or delete channels that aren’t being used.

Now let’s watch some shows! The Price is Right in HD:

Install & Setup and The Network Tuner HD Homerun

This guide will show you how to install and setup the HD Homerun for use with WMC. The HD Homerun is one of my favorite HD Tuners for HTPC for a many reasons including accessible from any HTPC/PC on your network and the ability to be installed anywhere on your network. Its a great device to use for HD over the air signals and this guide will help set it up correctly in WMC (special thanks to user Ali for helping with this guide)

  1. First physically install the tuner on your network according to the instructions in the packaging from the manufacturer.
  2. Verify HDHomeRun box powers up and receives IP address, as indicated by a single solid green light on front panel 5-10s after power on
  3. (Optional/recommended) Set up a reserved IP address on your DHCP server for the HDHomeRun (use a network scanning tool like iNet for iPhone to locate the HDHomeRun’s current IP address and MAC
  4. Download the latest version of the HDHomeRun software from Silicon Dust’s website
  5. Now run the HDHomeRun software installer

Next detect, configure and finish

6. Once your HDHomeRun tuner is found by the software, the HDHomeRun Install Wizard will start, automatically upgrade the tuner’s firmware, and reboot the unit.

7. Now in the “Install Wizard” enter your Zip Code in the LOCATION tab; click NEXT

8. In the “Application” tab set Main Application to Windows Media Center & Preview Application to either “HDHomeRun QuickTV” or “Windows Media Player”; click NEXT

9. In the TUNERS tab, set SOURCE TYPE for both tuners to Digital Antenna; the STATUS for both tuners should read “Pending”. Click NEXT

10. Now you will notice a new tab called “Digital Antenna” has been created. Select the first tuner and click SCAN. You should now see a series of channels/frequencies appear as the ATSC tuner scans for active broadcasts.

11. Once the scan is complete, selecting either tuner will display a list of found channels, indicating both the actual and “PSIP” channel. Clicking VIEW for a channel should open up the stream in the app you selected in step 8 (above).

Notes:

a. In my case, audio would not play using the QuickTV viewer, but did when using WMP as the viewer

b. (Optional) It may be worth running through the found channels to disable any you’re not interested in, as it seems it’d be faster through this interface than the channel disable method in MCE.

c. Once done with testing/disabling channels, select FINISH

12.  Now let setup the HD Homerun in WMC.  Move to “Tasks”

Click on “Tasks” and then “TV”
